I see a spirit reminiscing the human race that is now extinct (in the image). From there you can decide what happened. I see the third chakra on the skull. I see the spirit as the next step in human evolution and he is admiring the skull as one of the first specimens that truly used the third chakra and thought from a perspective different from individualism. The new race probably gave up war and the material world. Hence the glowing face of the "new" human.

Makes me think of Olaf's "First and Last Men".
